It was so strange: when Tony was recently going through his memories of Lady Mendl for your post, I remember him mentioning these cards from her and how they used to freak him out as a child somewhat. Can I pass it off as wanting to be sure to have interesting content? Probably not! I will be sure to be more regular with our posts now that the pop-up is up and running. Mr. Dwork is a very talented, kind man who it seems has managed to stay "under the radar" despite this talent. Some of his work in the '80s was so ahead of its time, including works by Bertoia who is so popular now. My father gave a speech about his career recently at the Museum of the City of NY, which I videoed. I think it didn't come out very well, but if it's salvageable I will post it. And I would have labeled this as simply an example of rocaille before noting your comments on the carved decoration and the arms. Now I will be more observant. After all, there are many examples of boiserie that are transitional Louis XV to Louis XVI, so it follows that there would be furniture as well.__The Devoted ClassicistAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-928334416143544626.post-55724594708863734502011-01-29T11:45:45.623-08:002011-01-29T11:45:45.623-08:00Thank you very much Blue - I really appreciate tha...Thank you very much Blue - I really appreciate that! A good rule of thumb for transitional period pieces my father always emphasizes to me is the form and decoration: the decorative elements (which are easier to adapt) reflect the evolving style where as the form usually reflects the previous one. Not sure I got this across as succinctly in the video but its what I was going for. The detail on those "river-god" type masks was absolutely charming. In fact, Daniel Katz's booth was one of my favorites - they had a sculpture that was a study for a sapper in full military dress, about 18" tall - remarkable. Whether its knowing how to work successfully with a material that is too thick or too thin and fragile, or being able to apply trim cleanly - good upholsterers who find a way to make it work are a treasure! I would much rather all chairs had more detailed and considered trim like the shaped leather tape with spaced nail-heads example we showed at the end. Sadly this is not the case with all chairs, as you no doubt well know.
